<Soprano Inhye Kim>

Inhye Kim is an internationally acclaimed Korean soprano and the first Asian artist to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School. Her Carnegie Hall debut recital in 1988 drew critical acclaim, with The New York Times praising her performance and writing, “Best of all was Inhye Kim.” Shortly thereafter, she appeared as soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 “Choral” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Yehudi Menuhin, who later described her in his autobiography as a soprano of “radiant timbre and exceptional intelligence.”

Ms. Kim received her musical training at Seoul National University and The Juilliard School. Early in her career, she achieved major international recognition through numerous prestigious awards, including the Dong-A Music Competition, the Korean Presidential Prize, the Lucrezia Bori Prize, the Chile International Vocal Competition, and the Lincoln Center Memorial Award. She has since performed at many of the world’s leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, the Vienna Musikverein and Konzerthaus, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Lisinski Hall in Zagreb, Symphony Hall in Japan, Kobe Newspaper Concert Hall, and Hong Kong City Hall. Her orchestral collaborations include appearances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Mozart Orchestra, Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, NDR Symphony Orchestra, Zagreb Philharmonic, Polish Chopin Orchestra, Warsaw Radio Symphony Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Korean Symphony Orchestra.

On the operatic stage, Kim has performed leading roles in more than fifty operas, encompassing repertoire from bel canto and verismo to French, Slavic, and contemporary works. Her roles include Iolanta, Il Trovatore, Aida, Le nozze di Figaro, Pagliacci, La Traviata, Gianni Schicchi, Tosca, Pelléas et Mélisande, Cavalleria rusticana, and Eugene Onegin. She is also highly regarded for her work in contemporary and original operas, including Yu Gwan-sun, Ahn Jung-geun, Hwang Jin-yi, Kang Suk-hee’s Boris’s Party, and the world premieres of Ryu Jaejoon’s Requiem and Krzysztof Penderecki’s Symphony No. 8 “Lieder der Vergänglichkeit.” The latter received international acclaim and was released on the Naxos label.

Following her debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Yehudi Menuhin in 1995, Kim has maintained an active presence on major European stages, appearing at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Budapest Spring Festival, the Finkenstein Festival, and the Vienna Musikverein. In 2008, she was invited to sing “Pace, pace, mio Dio” from La forza del destino at the Bosnia–Austria Peace Concert in Vienna, where her performance received a standing ovation from leaders of both nations.

In 2016, she served as a jury member for the Linz International Opera Competition, held at the historic Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. In 2017, she returned to the operatic stage as a leading artist, performing the role of Tatyana in Eugene Onegin and scenes from La Bohème at Korea’s World Opera Festival. In the same year, she joined the European tour of the Berlin Philharmonic as a soloist, where her performances were met with exceptional critical and public acclaim.

Throughout her career, she has collaborated with many of the world’s most distinguished singers, including Giuseppe Giacomini, Nicola Martinucci, Francisco Araiza, José Cura, and Cheryl Studer. In 2011, her performance of Ryu Jaejoon’s Requiem with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was praised by critics as “raising the art of dramatic soprano singing in contemporary music to a new height.” In 2013, she was invited by legendary soprano Anita Cerquetti to serve as a jury member for the Montecosaro International Voice Competition in Italy, further affirming her standing in the international operatic community.

Alongside her distinguished performing career, Inhye Kim has made a profound contribution to vocal pedagogy. She has held faculty appointments at major universities in Korea, served as Chair of the Vocal Department at the Mahler Conservatory in Vienna, and since 2014 has been regularly invited as a visiting professor to leading institutions in China, including the Tianjin Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music, Southwest University (Chongqing), and Minzu University of China. Under her guidance, all seven teams representing Minzu University of China achieved prize-winning results at the Beijing International Opera Competition—an unprecedented accomplishment that led the competition committee to confer upon her the Outstanding Mentor Award.

In recognition of her international stature and pedagogical excellence, she was appointed Full Professor of Vocal and Opera Studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in 2019, where she continues to teach and mentor emerging artists today.

Her students have achieved remarkable international success, earning prizes at the Tchaikovsky International Competition, the Queen Elisabeth Competition, BBC Competitions, Operalia, and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. They now perform on major international stages and serve on the faculties of prominent institutions worldwide, continuing her artistic and pedagogical legacy.

Ms. Kim remains actively engaged in performance, appearing regularly in international art song recitals, opera gala concerts, and special concert projects, sustaining a vibrant career that bridges the worlds of performance, education, and artistic leadership.
